EVMS Magazine

I illustrated the cover and designed this feature story for EVMS Magazine. EVMS Magazine covered some of the most relevant discussions in healthcare. Produced by Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), the magazine was circulated to more than 30,000 subscribers throughout southeastern Virginia. This issue of the magazine addressed the reasons behind the lack of Black males in the medical profession and highlighted ways EVMS encouraged diversity and inclusion within the institution and in the field of academic medicine.

The cover illustration received a Gold award in The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) 2018 Circle of Excellence awards competition. The international awards program honors outstanding work in advancement services, alumni relations, communications, fundraising and marketing at colleges, universities, independent schools and affiliated nonprofits.

Challenge

Create a standout design concept for the feature article that would translate to a provocative cover design inspiring people to pick up the magazine, read the story, and participate in the work that EVMS was doing to eliminate the deficit of Black males in medicine.

Process

Using the article’s title as a visual cue, I designed a simple yet striking cover illustration in black and white that continued to unfold throughout the interior pages of the article.

Outcome

The article received positive response on campus and within the greater EVMS community. The cover design earned a Gold award in CASE’s circle of excellence award competition receiving praise by the judges for its “excellent use of white space and a very effective simple design that perfectly illustrates the article's title. The artwork has an understated beauty that pulls you in.”
